Introduction
to Elite Academy
Since
its founding in 1986, Elite Academy has continually
endeavored to provide a fundamental and innovative
education. The academy does not teach tricks or gimmicks
for specific tests. We believe that education is a
continuous, life-long process, and to instill this idea
into students, Elite offers long-term programs that
reinforce the concepts learned in school and further
elaborate on these ideas to instill complete
understanding of the material. This is what makes us
different from other test preparatory centers; we are a
school committed to strengthening and reinforcing the
students’ overall academic capability. For example,
when an Elite teacher goes over a Math problem, he/she
teaches the students not just the method to get the
right answer but also the underlying principle of the
problem.
It
is our belief char short-cuts and gimmicks can never
replace long-term, consistent preparation.
Many of Elite’s students, as mentioned in the
New York Times, have been attending the academy since
they were in third grade. They go through Elite’s
program one level at a time. By the time they are
juniors in high school, the years of consistent
preparation will have eliminated the need for last
minute cramming. With the younger students, Elite’s
curriculum is geared to achieve academic confidence and
a solid intellectual foundation.
The
Curriculum
Elite academy offers a diverse curriculum
to suit any student’s needs:
·
The core curriculum consists of Math and English
classes designed for students from grade three to
twelve.
·
SAT and PSAT instructions are provided.
·
Classes for the entrance examinations for Hunter
College High School and the New York City’s
specialized High Schools – Stuyvesant, Bronx Science,
and Brooklyn Tech – are offered.
·
Elite also provides classes for SAT II (CHE.,
BIO., & PHY.), TOEFL, and ESL.
·
Elite offers an advanced math research course
that prepares high school students for the American High
School Math Exam (AHSME).
Calculus is concurrently taught in the course.
·
Elite offers a course that prepares junior high
school students for MATHCOUNT.
·
Special writing and reading classes for younger
students are available.
The Comprehensive curriculum provides
flexibility in meeting the needs of students.
For example, if a student excels in Math but
needs special attention in English, the student can be
placed in different levels for the two subjects.
Quiz,
Classwork, and Homework
·
Students begin every session by taking a
proctored quiz that covers either/both Math and English.
The quiz consists of materials covered in
classwork and reinforced by homework from the previous
session. The
results are returned during class so that students and
teachers have ample opportunity to review mistakes.
·
Classwork which covers new materials is reviewed
with the help of a teacher.
With the Classwork, stresses understanding of
underlying, in example problems.
The same teacher stays with a group of students
over the course of the course of the entire students,
and creating an atmosphere conducive to learning.
The students are encouraged to ask questions
during class.
·
Homework is designed to reinforce the concepts
learned in class. The
students are required to hand them in every week.
The homework is graded and returned weekly.
Extra English homework that covers current events
may be assigned in certain classes.
Teachers
The teachers selected by Elite reflect our
long-term, fundamental approach to education.
Elite teachers hold professional degrees in
education, in addition to degrees in their fields of
specialty. During the week, many teach at area schools
such as Stuyvesant and Bronx Science.
Elite students receive quality education and
adjust to their school environment because they are
taught by professional teachers who love what they do.
At Elite, learning starts with good teaching.
Other test preparatory center often employ
previous students who performed well in the standardized
test that they were preparing for, but are not
necessarily experienced professionals.
College Trip
Elite offers a college visitation program every
summer. This gives our students the opportunity to experience first
hand some of the nation’s top universities such as
Harvard, Yale, and MIT.
Elite students get a full tour of the
universities while having the opportunity to talk with
the college students about various aspects of their
schools.
Accomplishments
·
Elite annually places about 20
students into Hunter College High School.
·
About 150 Elite students enter Stuyversant, Bronx
science, and Brooklyn Tech High Schools every year.
·
About 15 Elite students pass American High School
Math Examination (AHSME) annually.
·
The annual college placement record for Elite
Academy always includes all of the Ivy League
universities like Harvard and Yale, and while having the
opportunity to talk with the college students about
various aspects of their schools.
·
Furthermore, the elementary school students
report significant improvement in both school grades and
confidence.
Open House Test
Every summer, Elite
conducts an Open House Test where the top achievers get
scholarships to attend Elite for a semester.
Time Schedule
Elite
has three different semesters per year: fall, spring,
and summer. The
fall is 15 weeks and the spring is 24 weeks.
During the fall and spring semester, elite holds
classes every day of the week except Mondays and
Sundays. Saturdays,
with morning and afternoon sessions, offer the most
number of classes.
A typical class lasts four hours.
During the 7 1/2 –week summer session, Elite
students cover what they will be learning in the
upcoming school year, thereby gaining considerable
advantage over their peers.
Report
Cards
Twice
every semester, Elite sends out report cards that show
quiz and homework grades.
Registration
An
evaluation test must be taken first so that the student
can be placed in the right level.
The two-hour evaluation test (different for each
grade) consists of Math and English sections.
The test is conducted on an appointment basis.
Therefore, a prior arrangement is appreciated.
