Grass Pollen Map
DID YOU KNOW?
There are 10,000 species of grass world-wide, of
which 1,200 species exist in North America. Of those 1,200, only 20 species are
responsible for triggering allergic symptoms in allergy and asthma sensitive
individuals.

Pollen
- Very High
- Almost all individuals with any sensitivity
at all to these pollens and molds will experience symptoms. Extremely
sensitive people could have severe symptoms.
- High
- Most individuals with any sensitivity to
these pollens and molds will experience symptoms.
- Moderate
- Many individuals sensitive to these pollens
and molds will experience symptoms.
- Low*
- Only individuals extremely sensitive to
these pollens and molds will experience symptoms.
- None*
- Allergy sufferers with sensitivity to these
pollens and molds will probably not experience any symptoms.
- * Early seasonal
exposure to high amounts of air-borne allergens in individuals sensitive to
allergy pollens will "prime" an individual to react to even the
smallest amounts of pollens later in the season. Lower recorded daily pollen
counts following higher seasonal pollination patterns may not provide any
relief to allergy sufferers who have been repeatedly exposed to pollens
during the season.
Grasses and
Grasslike Plants
There are about 10,000 difference species of
grass worldwide, of which 1,200 occur in North America. Grasses are ecologically
dominant worldwide, and represent about 20% of the earth's vegetational cover.
If you are allergic to one type of grass,
chances are you are probably allergic to several. Related are timothy, orchard
grass, redtop, sweet vernal grass, rye, fescue, and Johnsongrass. Bermuda grass
belongs to a different family. It is usually found in Southern states, and if
kept trimmed, as in a lawn, it will not pollinate.
1) North and Mid
Atlantic States

include bromegrass, fescue, Johnsongrass, Junegrass (Kentucky bluegrass),
orchard, redtop, rye, timothy, velvet grass, and vernal grass. Bermuda bluegrass
is more prevalent in the more southerly states.
2) Southern
Central and South Atlantic States

grass.
3) Mid Western
and Greater Ohio Valley

The main grasses to which people are sensitive to are Bermuda grass, bromegrass,
Canada bluegrass, canary grass, corn fescue Johson grass, Junegrass (Kentucky
bluegrass), orchard grass, redtop, rye, and timothy.
4) The Great
Plains and the South Western Grasslands
KS, NB, ND, SD,
OK and TX

bluegrass), orchard grass, quack grass, redtop, rye, and timothy.
6) SouthWestern
Desert
NV, AZ and
Southern CA

They include Bermuda grass, bromegrass, fescue, June grass (Kentucky bluegrass),
orchard grass, redtop, rye, salt grass, and timothy.
7) NorthWestern
States
