Great Job Kids!

I was surfing the web and came across the
Bursting Fourth online magazine. GREAT JOB KIDS! Keep up the good work.
I'm Janice, a 28 year old woman living in Red Bank, New Jersey. Keep
writing! It will help you all your life. Its a great way to express how
you feel, and believe me...when you get older, and you have a career,
employers really value someone who can put words together.
My 2 favorite stories on the site are "Defend A Friend?" by Eric

I have read many of the requests of kids
looking for pen pals, and I wondered if anyone would be interested in pen

I direct an equestrian club and have quite a few students who would be
interested in writing to a pen pal but who do not have internet access.
Please e-mail me at happytrails@prodigy.net

Help Keep the
Dragon Books, by Jackie French Koller, on the Shelves
By Jean, Virginia, USA
Hi, I'm a mother of 2 kids (ages 5 & 8)
in Virginia and I'm sort-of on a crusade. Recently, I stumbled across a
series of books by Jackie French Koller (The Dragonling, A Dragon in the
Family, Dragon Quest, Dragons of Krad, Dragon Trouble, Dragons and
Kings/geared to grades 2-5) and I read the first few books to my kids.
They (and I) loved the adventures of Darek
and his pet dragonling Zantor! So I contacted Ms. Koller via her webpage
(http://www.geocities.com/~jackiekoller/z-books.html) to tell her so -
only to learn that her publisher is allowing these books to go
out-of-print because they haven't sold as well as the more popular series
like Goosebumps. Now, I know this type of thing happens often, but there
just aren't that many really good fantasy/adventure books for kids and
these books are entertaining and fun. I'd hate to see other kids miss the
chance to enjoy them.
Would you consider printing a blurb about
this. I'm asking people who know and love these books to visit Ms.
Koller's homepage & use her link to her publisher (on her Books about
Dragons page) to protest his decision. Also, there is a spot for kids to
post their own reviews of books by Jackie French Koller. Anything you can
do to help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
--Jean Johnson, a mother in Virginia
P.S. If you'd like to see a sample of the
books, most library's carry at least the first two. Also, I've found the
books at SuperCrown and Amazon.com. But they won't be there for long
unless the word gets around and people speak up.

Why is the Mona
Lisa Smiling
By Steve, Grade 9-12, John F. Kennedy High
School, Bronx, New York, USA
I would like to suggest a worthy site for
your KidNews website. Learning About Leonardo is a web based project which
was developed by computer graphics students at John F. Kennedy High School
in the Bronx with their partners in Sweden, as part of a ThinkQuest
project to explore the mystery of the Mona Lisa.
The site features original music composed by
Leonardo da Vinci and compares the theories of Dr. Lillian Schwartz and
Rina de Firenze, author of Mystery of the Mona Lisa, through scientific
inquiry.
There are a dozen da Vinci diversions to
explore through random research, multilingual musical postcards to create,
and a multigenerational guestbook that's been signed for every day for
over 16 months.
We are part of the Getty Museum Digital
Experience, ArtsEdge, the Exploratorium, the Seattle Art Museum, the
Franklin Institute, the Boston Museum of Science, the National Museum of
Science and Technology of Milan and the National Museum of Science and
Technology of Israel.
The site became a GII US Award Education
Semifinalist.
The Well Connected Educator has published
several articles about our project. We are also included on the
International Society for Technology in Education web site and we were
featured as Cool School of the Month at Newsday in Education for August

Kids games in the
Republic of Panama
By Jean, Herndon, Virginia, USA
Our Brownie troop will be presenting
information on Panama for Thinking Day this year. We're short on games
that are native teo Panama & I wondered if you might know of some. So
far, I am aware of:
Juego de Pepitas de Maranon, a Panamanian
Indian game
Another game where a Spanish number is
called out and the children duck in groups of that number (but I don't
have a name for the game)
And I've been told that Panamanian children
like to play jacks. Any other suggestions for games we can demonstrate at
Thinking Day?? Thanks. If you don't mind, please write to me at: jtsmjohnson@hotmail.com

Just let me tell you it was a success and my

There are kids' jokes going around in

See you,
Alice
Kids say the darnedest things. Some grade
school teachers must agree with that, because they keep journals of
amusing things their students have written in papers. Here are a few
examples:
- The future of "I give" is
"I take."
- The parts of speech are lungs and air.
- (Define H2O and CO2.) H2O is hot water
and CO2 is cold water.
- The spinal column is a long bunch of
bones. The head sits on the top and you sit on the bottom.
- The four seasons are salt, pepper,
mustard and vinegar.
- Iron was discovered because someone smelt
it.

kidnews. One of our school themes next year is mulitcultural, so having my
students write to other children from different places in the world, would
tie in nicely with our theme.
Can you please send me information on how I
can go about doing a project like this with my students. Thank you for
your time and I hope to hear from you soon. Thanks again...
Youth Response
If you'll look in our Web Link section
you'll see several PenPal magazines. You sound like a good candidate for
this approach which has worked well for various schools and classes.
Have each child write a brief statement
describing his or her interests or favorite things using the following
format:
- 1. A title (eg. Likes to sing)
- 2. Child's first name
- 3. Child's grade and school
- 4. Statement of interest
- 5. Return e-mail address
If you or a teacher are screening all
in-coming e-mail, you may submit one permission form for the whole class.
A list of the names will suffice. Our "permission" form is
posted in various locations in Youth, including our "help and
info" section. Any home e-mail address posting requires a parent
signature on our permissions form.
Submit these as one e-mail message. We'll
create a magazine and post it. We'll also run a group message in our
"hellos" section pointing to your magazine.
Thanks.

New WWW
Educational Site: vocabulary.com
I want to bring to your attention a brand
new site that we just put on the WWW (as of May 4) at http://www.vocabulary.com.
Thankyou for delivering this email to the person responsible in your
organization for evaluating new educational sites.
We have been on the WWWeb since February
1995 with monthly word puzzle contests where we award gift certificates to
the contest winners (http://syndicate.com).
Many teachers and parents have asked if we would do vocabulary word
puzzles for specific grade levels and.... now we've done it with
www.vocabulary.com.
We came up with the idea that we could
create a"Vocabulary
University" on the WWW as a
spot where anyone could do graphically pleasing, root-based, word puzzles
at grade-level. The correct answers are given back immediately as well as
the use of the words in context. As the participants came back to try the
new sets of puzzles we would keep records of their participation and
eventualy give them a "diploma" from VOCAB U and other gifts
from our sponsors!!! We went to the CUE Conference in Palm Springs, CA two
weeks ago and had extraordinary feedback from virtually every one (the ESL
and LEP-Limited English Proficiency- teachers we met were especially
excited). We will be a participant at the NECC '97 conference (National
Educational Computing Conference) in Seattle 6/29/97.

If all e-mail
goes to school?
I intend on introducing the Pen Pals idea to
my grade seven and eight students. Our students do not have individual
E-Mail accounts. Is it possible to have all their letters sent to and from
my E-Mail address? If so, does every child still require to send and sign
the permission forms?
Thanks,
Vincent Charbonneau
Youth response:
You may send one permission form signed by
you provided that you will monitor incoming e-mail. If this involves
several classes, please include the following in their messages to be
posted in Youth:
Title of message
Childs's first name, grade, school
Child's message
We will probably create a penpal magazine
for you which you may want to name before sending the messages.

Students seek
books for students
Youth readers,
Our purpose with this letter is to ask for
your help in order to solve the following problem. We have to provide text
books to Greenwood elementary school children located in Tahlequah,
Oklahoma. We are a group of four students from ITESM International High
School and we are studying here at Northeastern State University thanks to
the agreement that both Universities made. As a part of our Thinking
Abilities Development class, we have to make this project come true which
is helping Greenwood Elementary School with this problem
The project consists on getting the largest
number of books possible, so that each child can take one and read it that
same night. The parents of the Greenwood Elementary School children can't
afford those books so it is the duty of someone to help the community, in
this case, Tahlequah, Oklahoma.
As teachers, you must know better than
anyone else that to introduce children to the reading world will provide
them great benefits in a future. Those children are not too far away from
being adults and to be someone very important one day, maybe a president
of the United States that takes wise decisions thanks to the reading habit
that he or she got in childhood. Unfortunately this dream cannot be
achieved without your collaboration. I'm sure these children may be very
grateful to you if you would like to help them now. If you would like to
donate some books please let us know as quickly as you can, for the sake
of these children future and career preparation, We'll really appreciate
your collaboration as well as those young children.
If you want to help, call us to the
following extension on Willy Hall:

ToonaCat's Kids
Club
By Laurie, La Crescenta, California, USA
Dear Friends
I recently put up a noncommerical web site
to promote creativity for elementary age kids, called ToonaCat's Kids
Club.
http://members.aol.com/toonacat/
I'm a former 4th grade teacher who taught
kids how to write stories with structure, as well as imagination, and I
feel it's important to encourage kids to participate in a site as well as
to give them encouraging feedback.
I understand your time is limited, so thanks
for reading this.
--Laurie Hansen Weaver
La Crescenta, CA
P.S. In case you're wondering ToonaCat is a
character I created as a teacher when I gave out hand drawn good work
awards. I always drew cats and soon the kids smooshed the words
a+cartoon+cat together until he became ToonaCat.

An unbelievably
powerful message
I would love to be able to get a message to
one of the children who submitted an unbelievably
powerful message. She is "Julia
Brown, 8th Grade, James Lick Middle School, San Francisco, California,
USA" I was wondering if you could send a message along to her for me?
I was weeping openly when reading her
submission entitled "A Mother's Voice", and when I shared it
with my husband, he was moved as well. I lost my father to a tragic
accident when I was 5 years old and still wish for all the things that
young Miss Brown does. I want her to know that her heartfelt words reached
out and touched other lives and that she will be remembered in our
prayers. I hope that she is someday able to have her wishes come true, and
others will share memories that will make her Mother more
"real." Most of all, I wish her heart peace.
If you could pass this along, I would
sincerely appreciate it. If you or Miss Brown would like to contact me, I
would welcome the correspondence.
Again, thank you.

Internet skills
for the home
The February, 1997 issue of
From
Now On - The Educational Technology Journal
includes the article "Parents and Students Together on the Web: A
Dozen Information Skills for the Home." Some excerpts:
The Internet is deceptively easy. You can
log on pretty much automatically. You can find information without much
trouble at all. Finding truth is quite another matter.
This is a great opportunity to support your
children, helping them to identify reliable sources, notice bias, resist
propaganda and develop their own independent ideas based upon research.
If you raise your children on a steady diet
of Internet information well leavened with lessons on how to browse, sort,
sift, cull and synthesize, you will see a tremendous pay-off as they pass
through school and into the job market.
In this article, we offer a dozen activities
you might enjoy exploring with your daughter or son.
1. The Question is the answer
Explanation: The better your children are at
generating questions, the more capable they will be when building answers.
In the old research, teachers provided questions while students searched
for answers. In an Information Age students must create their own answers
out of a puzzling world. The most important tool for building answers,
ironically, is questioning. The more thorough and thoughtful the questions
posed before and during the research, the greater the chance that the
investigation will lead to insight.
Activity:
Begin with a choice your family is about to
make. Let's say your family wants to buy a new car or a new TV. Maybe you
are thinking of a vacation.
Before you jump onto the Internet and begin
your search for information, challenge your child to think of as many
questions as possible while you type them or write them down. Questions
beget questions. They are like families. For most important questions, you
can easily list a hundred or more subsidiary questions, many of which can
be grouped by category. In the case of a new car, questions might group
under cost , performance , styling options , etc.
Once you have a healthy list of questions,
keep your list open so you can enter relevant findings as you encounter
them. Your child learns the importance of planning before researching. In
addition, the act of searching becomes more structured as the skills of
note-taking are introduced - note-taking which is channeled by the
questions posed. When children are quite young, the parent can do most of
the typing. As they reach upper elementary and middle school, they should
be performing most of this questioning and note-taking themselves.

completed a website containing many valuable resources used in our highly
successful Teen Court program. The site contains explanations of this
program for first time juvenile offenders, statistics, mock trials used in

in our area have particiapted in the volunteer services connected with
Teen Court.
We hope that you will examine the Teen Court
site listed below and link it to your site. We strongly believe that this
program can help communities. One community reports that their previous
repeat offender statistic was 50%. After Teen Court was established, that
dropped to 9%! That is not unusual for communities that adopt his program.
